WORCESTER – Crystaltina Montagna knows firsthand that family homelessness in Central Massachusetts is growing, and volunteers, like herself, are needed to alleviate the trauma on children.

“My family was rendered homeless around the 2008 market crash when our home went into foreclosure,” Ms. Montagna said in an interview. “We were physically moving out of the house while an auction was going on in our yard.”

With no place to go, her family lived in a moving van until they found a one-bedroom apartment.

The more than a year of homelessness while in high school steered Ms. Montagna toward a career in preventative psychological care for children.

Today, the 27-year-old Worcester resident works in the field of developmental psychology in the child drama department at University of Massachusetts Medical School.
