State reopens door to childcare assistance for low-income families

Massachusetts reopens childcare financial assistance — a step forward for the families we serve.

For the first time since April 2024, the Department of Early Education and Care is reopening access to income-eligible childcare financial assistance, creating roughly 2,100 new seats. The move is funded by a $31.2 million investment from the Fair Share (millionaires’) surtax.

Families experiencing homelessness are named as a priority population in this program, meaning they’ll move up the waitlist of nearly 32,000 children faster than the general pool.

As EEC’s Tyreese Nicolas told Statehouse News Service, this investment “will not allow us to reach every family that is waiting today, but it allows us to reopen the door again.”

We’re encouraged by this reinvestment and will keep advocating for the resources needed to close the gap for every family still waiting.
