Introducing this year’s keynote speaker: Brian Goldstone

Brian Goldstone is a journalist, an anthropologist, and the author of There Is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America, an “exceptional feat of reporting” (The New York Times) which exposes the dramatic rise of the “working homeless” in cities across America.

Goldstone received his PhD in cultural anthropology from Duke University. He was a Luce/ACLS Fellow in Journalism, Religion & International Affairs; his post-doctoral work at Columbia University included a Mellon Research Fellowship in the Society of Fellows as well as a Justice-in-Education Fellowship, during which he taught at Sing Sing Prison. He is the recipient of grants and fellowships from Fulbright, the Wenner-Gren Foundation, and the American Council of Learned Societies.

There Is No Place for Us is a book of unusual power and range. Each page is propelled by the integrity of Brian Goldstone’s careful labor, tracking people who must fight an American madness, as the stakes keep getting raised. The facts are a devastation, and a calling.
