BOSTON, Mass. — The Boston Globe recently published an in-depth story examining the rapid rise in homelessness among infants and toddlers nationwide, featuring Horizons for Homeless Children and its work supporting young children and families experiencing homelessness in Massachusetts.
The article follows a young mother and her daughters as they navigate housing instability and highlights how early childhood homelessness can have lasting effects on children’s development. Between 2021 and 2023, homelessness among infants and toddlers increased in nearly every state, with nearly 450,000 young children nationwide living in families without stable housing, according to data cited in the reporting.
“We’re talking about families who have generationally been disadvantaged by circumstance,” shared Kate Barrand, President and CEO of Horizons for Homeless Children. “The cost of housing has escalated dramatically. The cost of any kind of program to put a child in is escalating. There are a lot of things that make it really hard for families.”
The story highlights Horizons’ trauma-informed early education programs which provides infants, toddlers, and preschool-aged children with safe, stable learning environments while supporting families as they work toward long-term stability.
